We do not facilitate visits to Hue Children’s Shelter.\u00a0<\/b>We receive a lot of requests to visit the shelter. Although well intentioned, regular visitors to the shelter can be disruptive. Our aim is to ensure that the shelter is as much of a normal family environment as is possible – and having lots of regular visitors is not in line with this.<\/p>\n

We would rather the children at Hue Children’s Shelter were with long term families than living at the shelter.<\/b><\/p>\n

In Vietnam, there is no foster care system at present. We fully support the development of a safe and effective fostering system in Vietnam. The Ministry of Labour, Invalid and Social Affairs is currently piloting a model in Hanoi.<\/p>\n

At present, over 20 children live in Hue Children’s Shelter. These children deserve the same opportunities as every other child. Our work does not sustain the orphanage model – but we do believe that while effective, alternative\u00a0 and safe models are being put in place, children living in institutional care must be provided with the best possible support to have happy childhoods and independent futures.<\/p>\n

Hue Children’s Shelter is referred to as a ‘social protection centre’ in Vietnam – it is a home to children who have no family (who are often referred to as orphans), as well as children whose family are currently unable to take for them directly.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The shelter is under the management of Thua Thien Hue Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs – the government department responsible for children’s welfare in Vietnam.\u00a0<\/p>\n
