On August 2, under the sponsorship of Campaign Tobacco-Free Kids (CTFK), Hue Help coordinated with the Department of Education and Training of Thua Thien Hue province to organize a closing ceremony to summarize and evaluate the program to prevent child drowning through community-based interventions on teaching swimming skills and water safety for students in the province.
There were representatives of local departments, school principals and swimming teachers in the project attending the workshop. It highlighted the burden and reality of drowning in the world and in Vietnam, thereby proposing effective interventions recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), one of which is teaching swimming and water safety skills to children. Hue Help presented a report on the Child Drowning Prevention Program in 2024 in Quang Dien, Phong Dien, Huong Tra districts and Hue City. In addition, a representative from Phong Dien Department of Education and Training had a small presentation on sharing experience on implementing the project in the district.
The workshop was successful with impressive project results. According to Mrs. Cao Dang Ngoc Phuong, representative of the Department of Education and Training of Thua Thien Hue province, this workshop was considered “very open”. This is because Hue Help organized a ‘discussion session’ to listen to constructive comments on the program. We openly discussed the advantages and disadvantages with all swimming teachers so that the program can develop more and more. In every workshop, Hue Help always welcome feedback from all participants to make improvement for the future.
This year, ‘Swimming For Safety’ has successfully and safely trained 25 swimming teachers and 810 primary school students from Phong Dien, Quang Dien, Huong Tra districts and Hue city. Of which, 787 students can swim 25m and float on their back for 90 seconds. After the course, the ability to organize swimming programs in schools has improved, which strengthen the project’s sustanability. At the same time, awareness of the importance of preventing drowning in children has been raised for localities, schools and parents.
Hue Help could not do this without huge support from the sponsor – CTFK, local departments, schools and all swimming teachers. We are grateful for their efforts in the child drowning prevention program in Vietnam. We hope that more children can learn to swim and water safety skills!
Support our program to help more children can be safe in and around the water. Together we can make a difference!
